O’Neill comments on IRA terror raise serious questions

Statement by TUV Strangford spokesman councillor Stephen Cooper:

“The claim by Sinn Fein’s leader in Northern Ireland that there “was no alternative” to IRA terrorism is a telling insight into the mindset of someone who claims that she wants to be a First Minister for everyone. Just a few days ago victims of the IRA Claudy bombings met to remember their loved ones – an attack which resulted in the murders of nine innocent civilians. That is the stark reality of what Ms O’Neill claims there was “no alternative” to.

“These comments not only make a mockery of the Republican movement’s supposed support for the much-lauded Mitchell principles but on a more basic level, the rule of law, and grossly insult the countless victims of Provo terror. Furthermore, they provide cover for those who would continue to use violence to further their political objectives.

“It is time for us all to seriously reflect on where Northern Ireland is heading. How could any democrat give their support to someone with such views heading the government of Northern Ireland? Ms O’Neill can never attain the position of First Minister unless and until she finds a Unionist willing to act as her deputy. Any Unionist party which helps elevate the Sinn Fein leader after these comments are sure to face the wrath of the electorate. The matter remains in our hands. Unionists cannot enthrone any First Minister who claims there was “no alternative” to IRA terror, to do so would be grossly immoral and grotesquely offensive to all victims of republican terrorism.”
