Statement by TUV Newry and Armagh Keith Ratcliffe:

β€œI was saddened, but not surprised, to learn of the latest attack on the memorial to 18 British soldiers at Warrenpoint over the weekend. Only a month ago, I had the humble privilege of being invited to lay a wreath at the memorial, in honour of those who were brutally murdered there. I was struck by the number of family members in attendance at the short memorial service and it’s disheartening to think that the latest attack on this small memorial will no doubt cause them to relive the trauma of that dreadful day over 40 years ago.

Meanwhile, illegal shrines to unrepentant terrorists remain untouched across our district, while those with blood on their hands continue to roam the streets with impunity, asking us to accept that they had β€˜no alternative.’

We would praise the swift actions of the PSNI, who have already begun investigating this as a hate crime. We would reiterate their appeal to anyone who may have dashcam footage from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning to get in touch with PSNI or Crimestoppers.”
