Closure of Courthouse Another Blow to Ballymena

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:

“The closure of Ballymena Court House is another blow to the area coming on the same day as job losses were announced by Tescos.

“However, the issue has ramifications far beyond the staff directly impacted by this.

“As the Lord Chief Justice observed this morning access to justice, particularly when  it comes to vulnerable victims, has been seriously impeded by today’s decision.

“While no one disputes that tough economic decisions have to be made the reduction of 45% in the number of courthouses since 2013 is savage and there are now genuine concerns that the remaining courthouses will be able to operate effectively.

“Let’s recall that when policing and justice powers were devolved to Northern Ireland we were assured that the Executive had secured an £800 million package to ensure that the justice system operated on a sound financial footing. Just five years later we are seeing savage cuts to every aspect of the justice system be it the police budget or the courts system.”
