Statement by TUV Larne Councillor and East Antrim Assembly candidate Ruth Wilson:
“I and some other members of TUV attended the court hearing today because we are in full support of Pastor McConnell and the resolute stand he has taken for the fundamental rights we pride ourselves of in a democracy regarding the issues of freedom of speech and freedom of conscience.
“This case is seen by many as a threat to our liberties. If the powers that be are successful in their attempt to silence Pastor McConnell and have this elderly pastor, who has devoted over 60 years to helping many thousands of people of all classes, colours and religions, it will have serious ramifications for us all.
“There was no hint of hatred or incitement to violence in anything that Pastor McConnell preached but he did reference things which had been practiced in Muslim countries and in particular the case of a young Muslim woman who was pregnant and had been converted to Christianity. She was to receive 80 lashes and possibly martyrdom. Thankfully she and her husband are now living in the United States.
“No one is questioning the right of Muslims to worship in Northern Ireland. Contrast that with the experience of Christians in many Muslim countries who are forbidden to practice their religion.
“Pastor McConnell is a much loved and respected person by many across Northern Ireland. I know that there will be many remembering him and his family in prayer at this stressful time.”
