“Not surprisingly, the letter from the PM to the Joint First Ministers says nothing. Hence, perhaps, the reason why it had to be prized out of them and was not revealed for yesterday’s debate.
“However, there are critical realities which must not be lost sight of.
“Any arrangements which retained free movement of labour and goods only for Northern Ireland should be unacceptable to any unionist, because the practical effect would be to push the border back to the Irish Sea. Hence, of course, the enthusiasm of Sinn Fein and the SDLP for such an anti-unionist proposal.
“Free movement of goods can only be secured for the whole UK, or not at all.”
