Statement by Jim Allister MLA:
“I was delighted to attend the official opening of Slemish n tha Braid Credit Union today, which is International Credit Union Day.
“I congratulate all those involved in what is a remarkable transformation of their facilities at the site of the former Raglan Bar premises – and even more so because they have done so at their own expense (£350,000).
“That is an incredible feat and I congratulate the many volunteers whose selfless work over many years has made this possible. Slemish n tha Braid are now established as trailblazers for this in this vital component of the social economy.
“I am further delighted that there is to be further development of start-up commercial units at the rear of the building, and having set my expectations so high I will be delighted to come back and see them when completed!”
Statement by TUV Deputy Mayor for Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Cllr Timothy Gaston:
“In April this year I was invited to the event in Church Street when the plans for the new premises for Slemish in tha Braid Credit Union were unveiled. Even at that stage, I was very impressed with the project.
“Now that the new facilities have been completed and are open to the public, it is time to give credit to work of the Directors, current and past board members and to all the volunteers that have seen this plans come to fruition.
“Credit Unions are a tried and tested model for providing access to financial services. They are member owned and focus on financial inclusion for all users. I welcome the ethos, the community spirit and the benefits that come from being a member of the credit union.
“Slemish in tha Braid Credit Union is at the heart of the community and it will continue to be there for everybody.”
