Trouble Surrounding Internment Bonfire

Statement by TUV Court councillor Jolene Bunting:

“On Saturday night there was significant amount of trouble in the Divis Street area after an anti-interment bonfire. Although contractors had removed pallets on Wednesday morning, youths rebuilt the bonfire and it was set alight on Saturday night around 12pm. During the night a car was stolen and rallied around the area. It was later burnt out.

“I am extremely concerned that the behaviour surrounding these bonfires is uncontrollable. These bonfires have no historical links and go out of their way to be offensive with the National Flag and even the poppy symbol burnt upon them.

“I will be working to ensure that next year if the bonfire takes place there are significant measures in place to ensure people’s safety and that minimal damage is caused in the community.”
