Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:
“Having long argued that mandatory coalition contained within it the seeds of its own destruction, today’s developments come as no surprise to TUV.
“The institutions were not working and even before the latest IRA murder they didn’t deserve to survive on the simple basis of failure to deliver.
“Following the decision of the Business Committee the focus now immediately shifts to the DUP. It is incumbent upon them to follow through on their promise of yesterday and immediately resign from the IRA/Sinn Fein inclusive executive.
“Their attempt to fob the issue off onto other parties has failed miserably – as it deserved to.
“The DUP and indeed the wider political establishment in Northern Ireland now need to recognise that the institutions established in 1998 have failed and are incapable of delivery.
“They are dead and deserve to be consigned to the dustbin of history.
“After yet another IRA murder surely Unionism can recognise that government which contains within it their political wing as of right for ever can never work.
“It is time to sweep away the debris of failure at Stormont and to re-engage with the democratic norms where the electorate have the right to remove a party from government and an opposition to hold the executive to account. Voluntary coalition and a proper Opposition are the path to durable devolution. It is time to liberate our people from the chains of failure that is mandatory coalition.”
