In a statement TUV Cusher councillor Keith Ratcliffe said:
“I was bitterly disappointed to see IRA bands participate, in what was sold as a ‘cross-community’ event, this year again in Armagh City.
“There are three important things to note. Firstly, this parade is in lieu or instead of the Council organised event of previous years. Secondly, it receives considerable Council funding. Finally, it receives considerable exposure as a result of Council funded publicity as attested to on the council website.
“Why is rate payers money being used to fund an event that includes the glorification of terrorism?
“The organisers should explain what Republican bands have to do with St. Patrick.
“Let me be clear; St. Patrick’s Day provides a genuine opportunity for all cultures and communities to come together and celebrate.
“However, this opportunity was once again squandered for an exercise in Republican supremacy. Ironically these are the same people who promise an ‘Ireland of equals’!
“What was previously a genuinely cross-community event, has now turned parts of Armagh into a no-go zone for members of the Unionist community on St Patrick’s Day.
“There are many aspects of the parade which no one could take issue with, however the event is poisoned by the inclusion of terrorist sympathisers.
“St. Patrick’s Day provides an excellent opportunity to show off the ancient history and culture of the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland.
“However, the day is being manipulated by those seeking to glorify bloodlust.
“How could any Unionist or Protestant feel comfortable watching bands who exist to commemorate the slaughter of their kith and kin?
“Last year I stood alone in challenging this affront. This year, I hope I will be joined by other Unionist Councillors in calling it out. We have a moral duty to speak up to defend the rights of innocent victims of terrorism.
“In the run up to this event, I shared my concerns with Council officials and I will be writing to ask that arrangements are re-evaluated for next year.”
