Statement by TUV MLA Jim Allister:
“The report published yesterday by the Joint Committee of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission and the Irish Human Rights Commission on Brexit should be robustly rejected by all Unionists.
“At its heart it is fundamentally anti-British. The demand that people in Northern Ireland should be able to stand and vote in European elections post Brexit shows that the body has zero regard for Northern Ireland’s position within the United Kingdom.
“There is not a single mention of regulatory alignment in the entire Belfast Agreement. Thus, regulatory divergence is compatible with its operation. So, away with this nonsense that the Belfast Agreement is threatened by Brexit.
“This report reinforces my belief that Commissions regard it as their job to ensure that the country is run in line with their own political outlook regardless of what the electorate say – a strange paradox indeed when one remembers that one of the most fundamental rights is the right to free and fair elections.”
