Statement by TUV councillor Timothy Gaston:
“The shocking rise in waiting times exposed this morning by the BBC is an indictment of Northern Ireland’s failed political system.
“Stormont is wasting millions on welfare fines while people are waiting a year or more for essential medical treatment.
“It cannot be denied that the root cause of this is mandatory coalition which ensures that parties with no common interest or vision for Northern Ireland are in government together for ever.
“There is justifiable anger about the state our country is in. Anywhere else in the United Kingdom, indeed anywhere else in the Western World, the public would vote the government which caused this mess out of office. People in Northern Ireland are denied that right because of mandatory coalition. TUV, and only TUV, argue that this has to change.”
