Cooper Speaks out on Suicide

Speaking in Ards chamber, Cllr Stephen Cooper said:

“In my role as mental health champion for this council, I am keen to raise awareness of all aspects of mental health and one of the most challenging issues is that of suicide.

“Statistically speaking, more people have died since the Belfast Agreement from suicide than died as a result of terrorism throughout the Troubles.

“This is a startling fact which should serve as a wake up call to everyone right across not just our borough but the whole of Northern Ireland.

“The aftermath of suicide is devastating to any family, and many if not all, are left trapped within myriad of emotions, ranging from guilt and blame  to profound regret that something could have been done to save their loved ones.

“It is my clear intention to bring about measures to deter anyone who is intent on tragically ending their lives from doing so, and I will be working with directors to identify measures we can introduce from other councils to help save lives.

“I am grateful for members tonight giving me unequivocal backing for my plans, and I hope we can have a direct effect on these harrowing incidents and prevent further losses.

“This is the start of a significant journey which will go a long way to reach out to those isolated by depression and dark thoughts and I hope it will provide hope and comfort to all those in a difficult place who may wrongly believe nobody cares.

“It is clearly evident tonight from the comments made, that all of us here do care; and we will be sending out that message loud and clear from this chamber at every opportunity. “I believe we can make a difference, and we WILL make a difference.”
