Comber Cllr Stephen Cooper has welcomed the opening of a new boxing club and gym in Castle Street.
Speaking on Saturday, from the newly equipped hall, he said:
“I am delighted to see these premises being utilised for the community and offering people of all ages a fantastic facility to take advantage of.
“Boxing is a sport in which Northern Ireland has had widespread success in both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, and of course, we have our very own world world champion in Tiger’s Bay, Carl Frampton.
“The discipline deriving from this sport is something often overlooked and I know from other clubs it has undoubtedly had an overwhelmingly positive effect on many young men and women throughout the Province. I commend the hard work and drive of Ruth Magee in bringing this outlet to the community and sincerely hope the club goes from strength to strength and receives the support it requires from the local populace.
“I will be writing to schools and colleges in our area to inform them of this exciting new facility and hope they can come and see for themselves the already growing numbers training every week.”
The gym is situated at the back of the charity shop, 57-59 Castle St. Comber, opens on Tuesday evenings, with classes for 8 yrs -16 yrs 6pm – 6.45, women 6.45 – 7.45pm and men 8pm – 9pm. Two qualified coaches are on hand to train and guide anyone who is interested from novice up to experienced boxers. Join them on Facebook .
