Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:
“In his Irish News interview published this morning co-First Minister McGuinness admits what ordinary members of the public already know – the executive is an embarrassment.
“McGuinness has good reason to be embarrassed about the record of the executive he jointly chairs. It has failed to deliver for the people of Northern Ireland whether Unionist or Nationalist. The dearth of executive business on the order papers of the Assembly is a telling testimony to this fact.
“Of course the core of the problem is the fact that mandatory coalition ensures that there is, as McGuinness puts it, “nothing normal” about Northern Ireland politics.
“The denial of the right to vote a party out of government and the denial of the right to have an opposition means that parties are in government for ever and there is never an incentive for them to improve on delivery.
“No opposition means that opportunities to highlight and expose flaws are limited.
“It is extraordinary that the co-chair of the Executive should admit so openly that he is embarrassed about the government he jointly heads. Sadly there is still no sign of any embarrassment about his involvement in IRA terror.”
