Statement by TUV Court Councillor Jolene Bunting:
“TUV has long argued for the need for radical improvement in the services offered to children and families suffering from autism. Back in May last year we expressed concern that the number of clinicians trained to diagnose autism was not sufficient to meet the department’s own target of a 13 week period for assessment from the date of referral. Moreover, at that time the Minister had no plans to recruit extra staff, meaning the failure would continue.
“847 referrals were in breach of the 13 week target. This meant 847 families waiting longer than the department promised to even be assessed. Given the need to address autism needs of pupils within our schools, the consequence is that autistic children were suffering undue delays and loss.
“The needs of autistic children can be complex and varied, but if assessments are not being made expeditiously, then, these children are being failed.
“The announcement at the weekend of a two million pound boost for autism services was a welcome development but long overdue. I hope it goes someway to addressing the issues which have caused families the length and breadth of Northern Ireland serious concern.
“However, there is still a big failure when it comes to education. There appears to be a very disjointed approach between it and the health service which causes parents a lot of concern. The weekend’s announcement looks unlikely to address this is any meaningful fashion.
“I would congratulate those who came to Stormont on Monday to demonstrate about this issue. I have no doubt that the prospect of the protest at his doorstep helped to focus the Minister’s mind.”
