Mid Ulster TUV candidate Glenn Moore made a call to Coagh village last night, the purpose of his visit was to see for himself the devastation that has been caused by the recent pollution of some local rivers flowing into the Ballinderry river.
Mr Moore said:
“I took time to engage with members of the local angling club, and they informed me that the sheer extent of the pollution cannot be underestimated. Years of hard work and dedication by members stocking the river, has been completely decimated. For something like this to happen is heartbreaking for the club, who have a membership of over 100. Not only that but visiting anglers were bringing revenue to the club and the village. It is feared that this is now gone.
“As a keen angler myself, I really feel for those who regularly fish in the river. There is an onus on us all to take due care and attention around tributaries and rivers so that incidents like this are avoided if at all possible.
“This case is being described as one of the worst to have happened on this water way. Over the coming days the full extent of the damage will become clear meanwhile DEARA officials are continuing with their investigations to identify the source of contamination but I fear it is already clear that it will take years to replenish the fish stocks.”
