Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:
“Today is a dark day for justice and religious freedom in Northern Ireland.
“It is scandalous that a family owned business was dragged before the courts by a publically funded quango and subjected to a year of torture. I congratulate the McArthur family on the dignity and grace they have displayed throughout this ordeal.
“I very much hope that this judgement will be appealed as it has profound ramifications for religious freedom in Northern Ireland.
“The judgement in the Ashers Bakery case is a far-reaching assault on freedom of conscience, with religious belief suppressed by success, at this stage, for the aggressive gay rights agenda.
“It is imperative that this flawed judgement is appealed and though same will place further stress on the McArthur family, who have conducted themselves magnificently, they will have the continuing support of all who cherish the foundational freedoms of conscience and religious belief.”
