Comber TUV councillor Stephen Cooper has welcomed the lighting up of council buildings on Thursday 11th March to mark European Victims of Terrorism Day.
Councillor Cooper said:
“I am delighted to receive approval for this small commemoration of European Victims Day. This is the first year in which this significant date will be marked in this fashion. It sends a message that our council is prepared to afford all victims of terrorism and their families the respect and recognition they deserve.
“It is, however, shocking that Sinn Fein/IRA blocked a similar gesture at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, to mark the day. Sinn Fein chooses to snub all innocent victims because they refuse to acknowledge the fact that there is a fundamental moral difference between victim and victim maker.
“What a telling insight into the “island of equals” they tell us they want to create.
“At least in Ards and North Down, we have shown that we will pay our respects to all the victims and oppose any attempts to erase the truth about the grotesque and futile terrorist campaign which resulted in so many despicable atrocities.
“At a time of solemn reflection on the past, it is imperative that we never forget those taken from us by those guilty of the most heinous human rights abuses throughout the years of terror.”
