Campaign goes on for fair deal for caravan owners

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:-

“As a follow up to the Petition which I presented to the Assembly, today I led a delegation of caravan owners to meet with the cross-departmental working party overseeing the review of the Caravans Act.

“The case for reform is overwhelming. Exploitation of caravan owners by some – not all – park owners must stop. Only legislative change can guarantee this.

“The lack of security of tenure, arbitrary and unwarranted hikes in pitch fees, refusal to recognise owners associations and extortionate charges for incidental services, all need to be addressed.

“The way to do this, I believe, is to extend to holiday caravan owners the same protections that exist in Part 1 of the Caravans Act for those in permanent occupation of caravans.

“We therefore pressed upon the working party the need to bring forward such legislative change as the longterm solution. Meanwhile Trading Standards should act more assertively in respect of ‘rogue operators’.

“I encourage all interested caravan owners to respond to the current consultation/questionnaire https://www.communities-ni.gov.uk/sites/default/files/consultations/communities/dfc-2021-review-caravans-act-consultation-questionnaire.docx “
