VE Day – a celebration of the victory of liberty over tyranny

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister:-

“The gratitude due to the World War II generation, who preserved our freedoms, should be unfailing. VE Day is special as delivering victory and vindication for liberty over tyranny in Europe.

“VE Day encapsulates not just the success of good over evil, but reminds us that freedom never comes cheaply. It was the selfless sacrifice of all in the War effort which made that day of victory possible. The unwavering leadership of Winston Churchill and our Royal family was matched by the unwavering courage and tenacity of the people.

“The freedom preserved and passed on to succeeding generations must never be taken for granted. There are still evil forces of tyranny at work, as we in Northern Ireland know only too well having had to face the evil of terrorism.

“As a nation today we look back with gratitude and proud of the huge contribution made by Northern Ireland to the War effort. Sadly, not all on the island of Ireland behaved with such honour – the official condolences of the Dublin Government on the death of Hitler still stains their history.

“Though today we cannot celebrate VE Day as we ought, but let us all remember and give thanks to God for the deliverance wrought by the sacrifice of our nation, Commonwealth and allies.”
