Allister Meets with Israeli Delegation at Stormont

TUV leader Jim Allister was part of a group of MLAs who met a delegation from Israel in Stormont today including Isaac Herzog, recently opposition leader in the Knesset.

Commenting on the meeting Jim Allister said:

“Northern Ireland’s historic links to the Herzog family date to the birth of Chaim Herzog in Belfast 100 years ago last month. He went on to become the sixth President of Israel severing from 1983 to 1993. It was good to meet with two of his sons today at Stormont and to hear a little of the challenges faced by the state of Israel at the current time as well as exploring opportunities for better trade and links between Israel and the UK which will be maximised by Brexit.

“While the meeting was positive it was disappointing that the Herzog family visited Northern Ireland after a blue plaque marking the birthplace of Chaim Herzog in Cliftonpark Avenue had been removed after a series of anti-Semitic attacks. It was clear that the delegation was concerned about the upsurge in anti-Semitism in the UK. It is shameful that this tangible link between Northern Ireland and Israel is no longer marked as it once was.”
