Statement by Jim Allister MLA:
“When Ballee Community High School was closed, assurances were given that the Youth Club would continue as normal as it was a great benefit to children from the area, where clear benefits were gained for all involved.
“The proposed move of Education Authority staff from County Hall to the former Ballee site has set off alarm bells for all those who currently use the Youth Club, as the thrust of the information coming out is that the Youth Club will be evicted.
“There is surely a way to accommodate a long running and successful youth club that provides a great focal point for children in the Ballee area. I would be interested to see the rationale being used by the Education Authority that would justify any eviction.
“Now, we are told there will be a public consultation – but considering the noises coming out at the minute, it would appear there already is a predetermined outcome which makes a mockery of an open and transparent consultation.
“The Education Authority need to step up and do the right thing.”
Deputy Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Cllr Timothy Gaston continued:
“If the decision to evict the Ballee Youth Club goes ahead, then it is a shameful act by the Education Authority. This youth club is an asset to the community who know all too well the great work it does.
“Ballee comes into the top 20% of the most deprived areas in Northern Ireland. There are not enough facilities, and therefore withdrawing such a vital one as this will have lasting consequences.
“Many children use this wonderful service, and they have needs which need to be catered for. I will do my best to support Ballee Youth Club, as will TUV.”
