Statement by Richard Cairns, South Antrim TUV representative:
“Following reports of children coming into contact with Giant Hogweed and suffering serious burns, it is a timely reminder to everyone that Giant Hogweed is both common and extremely dangerous.
” Giant Hogweed grows along the Sixmile Water and there is also some growing along the Lough Shore by Rea’s wood. The sap of this plant reacts with sunlight and the resulting burns are not only extremely painful, but they can linger on the skin for many years.
“Please be careful when you are out over the summer and stay away from this plant.”
