Statement by Alderman Stewart McDonald, TUV Bannside:
“It is with great pride that we witnessed a truly historic and momentous event – Northern Ireland at the European Championships. That in itself was cause for celebration. The cherry on the cake was the dedication, pride and team spirit that got our wee country into the knock out stages of this elite tournament.
“It is my honour to propose to Mid and East Antrim Borough Council that we confer the freedom of the Borough to Michael O’Neill and the Northern Ireland football team in recognition of their achievements.
“I hope other will join us in supporting the motion.
Cllr Timothy Gaston echoed his colleagues comments:
“Michael O’Neill and the entire team did this country proud. I travelled to France to watch the team and we have certainly left our mark on European football.
“This motion shows our appreciation to what this team has achieved.”
